Discipline Kept Crysis Away from Consoles says Demartini

June 26, 2009 · Filed Under crysis warhead · Comment

Cevat Yerli last year said that his company was no longer working on PC exclusive titles. This was mainly because of the piracy plaguing the platform.

The company took time to actually come up with a project, which would arrive on the Xbox 360 and the PS3 in addition to the PC. The new project is Crysis 2. It has no release window at the moment. The gamers only got a short look at the E3 trade show.

There is a good question regarding this. Why did Crytek wait until now? We know that the company has brought a game like Crysis Warhead to gaming consoles as well as the PC.

The answer to this may be a simple word, “discipline.” This has been stated by David Demartini, the general manager of Electronic Arts Partners.

He told, “have a reputation for not going to a platform just to exploit the platform, but they go to the platform when they have something that’s as good as anything in the industry, if not the best on that platform, so I think what consumers can look forward to is them setting a new bar against any game whatsoever on those platforms.”

CryEngine 3 is ready for consoles says Yerli

Recently in an interview to the media, Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek, said that the CryEngine 3 was ready for consoles.

He says “We’re ready to bring Crysis to all platforms. Our recent breakthrough allowed us to take the next step without compromising.”

Yerli even said that there are possibilities of a console version of the original Crysis. He said that Crytek and EA jointly decided against it.

For the difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Crysis 2 he said, “one’s stronger on the GPU side, one’s stronger on the CPU side, so depending on what you’re doing where, the PS3 does perform here sometimes better, the 360 performs other things better.”

About the original Crysis, one of the main criticisms was that it ran very badly on low-end PCs. This is something which has been improved in Crysis Warhead.

Yerli also said, “I don’t want to defend CryEngine 2, because CryEngine 3 does a better job.”

Yerli says all asked him why they are not going to consoles

It is a fact that all console gamers wait for years for the Crysis series to make its much-awaited living room debut. The E3 conference last week announced that the German developer’s signature series will be available in stores for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. These were the part of the EA Partners program.

In a recent interview after the announcement, the CEO and president of Crytek, Cevat Yerli and the GM of EA, David DeMartini explained the reasons of releasing the game on multiplatform.

Yerli said, “It’s a question of more than economics. At the end of the day we’re paying salaries and we all have to live, but that’s one side of this job. But most importantly and a bit more tangible to us are the families, the nephews, and sons who ask, ‘Why aren’t you going to consoles?”

He further added that it is a kind of like bothering people. The developer and publisher has been asked several time in the last 3 or 4 years. Yerli also insists that the company will not be committing to a console Crysis 2 unless it would sustain the established reputation with the benchmark-setting efforts such as Crysis and Far Cry.

The Crysis and its follow-up, Crysis Warhead were PC exclusive. Crysis 2 will be different. It has been officially announced that Crysis 2 will be not only limited to the PC. It will also be launched for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. If we remember last years news, Crytek President Cevat Yerli blamed that high levels of piracy for the company’s decision to stop developing exclusively for the PC, saying that games released on consoles “sell factors of 4-5 more.”

He further said that this Crysis 2 is not only the next game in the Crysis franchise, but it is the first title that they are developing for consoles and the first title being built on CryEngine 3. He said, “Nothing speaks more to the success of the EA Partners program than when a studio the caliber of Crytek continues to work with us,” added EA Partners General Manager David DeMartini.

“Crytek is already one of the elite PC development studios in the world and we are excited to have the opportunity to partner with them in bringing their award-winning technology and gameplay to more platforms and a wider audience with Crysis 2.”

Crysis 2 is a reality

Now it is a reality. Yes, Crysis 2 is a reality. EA and Crytek recently announced it during the EA’s big E3 press conference on Tuesday. The companies are not talking more about the game itself. Not even in any interview. It has been seen shortly before the press conference with Crytek boss Cevat Yerli and EA Partners head David DeMartini.

At present, both the companies are quite happy of sticking with the announcement. Yerli and DeMartini says that the deal for EA to publish Crysis 2 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 is an extension of earlier deal for Crysis and Crysis Warhead.
Oh! Yes, Crysis 2 is multiplatform and not a PC-exclusive title.

Cevat Yerli said that the very competitiveness of Crytek was at stake. He said that the Crysis game was successful from a critical and commercial angle. Yerli said, “Going forward we need to be more profitable, and the only way to do that is logically to move our company toward the consoles.”

Crytek makes some damn impressive game engines

May 25, 2009 · Filed Under Crytek · Comment

The one serious thing that we have learned about Crytek is that the developer makes some damn impressive game engines. Crytek’s games such as Far Cry and Crysis are really gorgeous to look at. The latest version of the CryEngine is also capable of some really impressive works of art. Now, though, it sounds like console gamers are set to experience the latest version of the CryEngine.

Recently in an interview, Mark Atkinson, Crytek’s director of technology, said to Edge Magazine that how the developer was able to make the engine work with both the PlayStation 3 and also the Xbox 360. He said that it has been tricky, but the team got a strong PS3 engine with all the major systems running on SPUs. With middleware, what gamers want is for someone else to do all that so the developer can just concentrate on making games.

He also added, “We have parity between the platforms now: both run at the same speed…. if the game’s shader-heavy it runs a bit faster on 360; if it’s compute-heavy with physics and particles, then the SPUs take over and it’s a bit quicker on PS3.”

Play on local trusted network only

May 22, 2009 · Filed Under crysis warhead · Comment

One vulnerability that users should be aware of. I think you all remember the vulnerabilities that hit Crysis. Recently it had experienced a “keychange”, packet information disclosure vulnerability. This vulnerability of the Crysis caused much chaos at the time of its occurrence and users are urged to not forget it.

The basic problem with the Crysis vulnerability is that it can be exploited by malicious individuals for the purpose of disclosing particular sensitive and also confidential information. In Crysis the client/server sends a disconnect packet. This packet of disconnect contains many important and vital information such as IP addresses, client statuses as well as the player’s nicks. All these occur when a specific key exchange packet is being received.

Impact of this disconnect packet information disclosure of Crysis is the exposure of sensitive information and also exposure of particular system information.

Few of the file components of Crysis are vcredist_x86.exe, VistaEssentialsApp.exe, crysisdedicatedserver.exe, fxc.exe and Crysis_code.exe. Attackers make use of this and then they are able to reveal information without any authorization at all. Solution to this is to play multi player games on networks which they trust or alternatively to play on their local trusted networks only.
